Our vastly experienced delivery team run ERCA qualification training programmes at our two UK outdoor centres, based in Reading and Burton-upon-Trent. Our courses provide you with the perfect platform to develop your capabilities and understand the latest information regarding equipment, safety and legislation.

All of the courses, once successfully passed, are valid for three years as dated by the final course date, if more than six years elapse between refresher courses then the whole course must be re-taken in order to keep the qualification valid.

Each delegates attending a course (with the exception of refresher courses) will receive their course manual and certificate included within the price of attending.


ERCA Traditional Low Ropes Instructor

Course Description

This award is designed for anybody who owns, operates or wishes to instruct on a low ropes course. A low ropes course is defined as a ropes course that is close to the ground and is absent of a belay system, instead relying on spotting techniques. During this course, you will explore a range of low ropes activities from spiders webs through to Mohawk walks, whilst developing your own facilitation and group management skills as well as ensuring that you operate safely. This course meets the ERCA training standards, EN15567-2 and is on the approved course list for many youth organisation including scouts, guides and cadet units.

Admission Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age
  • Hold a valid first aid certificate
  • Good physical condition – be able to partake in the activity
  • At least one days experience on a low ropes course

ERCA Traditional High Ropes Instructor

Course Description

This course is designed for anybody who operates or works on traditional high ropes courses. These courses, often used for developmental training as well as recreational use consist of:

  • Single Activity Elements (Catwalks, Broken Bridges, Multi-Vines etc.)
  • Multi Activity Elements (Jacobs Ladder, Crate Stack, High All-aboard etc.)
  • Dynamic Activity Elements (Trapeze etc.)

Delivered through a range of practical and theoretical sessions, the course covers the whole syllabus of the ERCA traditional high ropes course instructor and meets the requirements set out in EN15567-2. Upn successful completion, the qualified instructor will be able to manage groups and individuals on a traditional high ropes course as well as be provided with up-to-date knowledge on equipment, risk assessing, working at height as well as developing their own instructing skills.

ERCA Combined Traditional High and Low Ropes Instructor

Course Description

This course is designed for anybody who operates or works on traditional ropes courses, encompassing both high and low elements. This course covers all of the content from both the traditional high and low ropes courses and is delivered through a range of practical and theoretical sessions. The course covers both of the ERCA traditional high & low ropes course syllabuses and meets the requirements set out in EN15567-2. Upon successful completion, the qualified instructor will be able to manage groups and individuals on a traditional ropes course and be provided with up-to-date knowledge on equipment, risk assessing, working at height as well as developing their own instructing skills.

ERCA Instructor Conversion Course

Course Description

This course is designed for individuals who already have experience of operating or working on traditional ropes courses and wish to convert that knowledge into a qualification. This course, encompassing both high and low elements, covers all of the content from both the traditional high and low ropes courses, but over a reduced timescale. Whilst this course is delivered through a range of practical and theoretical sessions, delegates are expected to already have an in-depth knowledge of the subject and should see the course as a confirmation and assessment of their existing experience against the ERCA training syllabus and EN15567-2. Upon successful completion, the qualified instructor will be able to manage groups and individuals on a traditional ropes course and have up-to-date knowledge on equipment, risk assessing, working at height as well as developing their own instructing skills.

ERCA Instructor Refresher Day

Course Description

This one-day course is for traditional high or low instructors whose certificates have expired. The course is delivered through a mixture of theoretical and practical sessions and it is a great opportunity for you to get updated about the latest industry information. During the day, the ERCA instructor syllabus will be revisited to ensure that all delegates are up-to-date with legislation and current best practice in line with EN15567-2. There is ample time to ask any questions you may have concerning best practice techniques or equipment. With no formal assessment, it is an excellent opportunity to network with other ERCA instructors.

ERCA Generic Rescuer

Course Description

As the health and safety of everybody on a ropes course, both clients and staff, is of the utmost importance, there needs to be somebody on site who can facilitate a rescue. This generic rescue course, delivered through a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, allows individuals to gain the skills and knowledge needed to perform rescues both on traditional ropes courses and adventure parks. The course meets the standards of the ERCA training syllabus as well as EN15567-2 and enables rescuers to perform passive & active rescues as well as develop their knowledge of casualty care, understanding environmental influences and their additional responsibilities.

  • Hold a ERCA traditional high ropes or an adventure park instructor qualification

ERCA Generic Rescuer Refresher Day

Course Description

This one-day course is for generic rescuers whose certificates have expired. During the day, the ERCA generic rescuer syllabus will be revisited to ensure that all delegates are up-to-date with legislation and current best practice in line with EN15567-2.

Special Element Training 

We offer special element training and assessment. Typical special elements are: abseil towers, zip wires, 3G swings etc. We are able to offer special element training at your site to ensure that you or your staff are completely familiarised with the equipment and operating procedures.


Bespoke Ropes Course Training

Ropes course training is available to individuals or organisations that wish to hold ERCA qualifications at their own site in order for their staff to become completely familiar with the equipment and operating procedures. GRA also offers bespoke ropes course training and can offer ERCA site-specific certification for training that is delivered at your own facility. Whilst the training would not result in an ERCA qualification, it would still follow the recommendations set out in EN15567-2.

In addition to ropes course instructional training, we offer a range of support services from assistance with writing risk assessments & operating procedures to creating a bespoke progressive training scheme for all your staff. All of our bespoke services fall under the ERCA site-specific award scheme and therefore you are assured of receiving the best, up-to-date industry advice for your business.
